Brazil is the largest importer of fertilizers in the world — in 2021. It imported 41.6 million tons of fertilizers or chemical fertilizers, an investment of US$ 15.1 billion. Of that total, 85% came from other countries, according to data from the National Association for the Diffusion of Fertilizers (ANDA).
Of this total, 23.3% came from Russia, according to data from the Ministry of Economy's Comex Stat. This corresponds to more than 9 million tons of the input. Another 3.36% came from Belarus, an ally of Vladimir Putin's country.
Brazil imports of fertilizer increased 440% from 1998 to 2021.
Russia is a very important country for the Brazilian fertilizer market, accounting for approximately 22% of the 40+ million tons of fertilizers imported by Brazil in 2021. The Russian representation in the world fertilizer market demonstrates its importance: 2nd world producer of nitrogen fertilizers, 4th in phosphates and 2nd in potassium.
