SAFRINHA Soybeans are legal to plant from Sept 15th to Dec 31.
The 2nd crop or Safrinha is planted after the soybeans are harvested. This occurs in January, Feburay, and March.
2nd crop crops are usually cotton, corn or edible beans.
It is illegal to plant soybeans as a 2nd crop in most of Brazil in order to reduce the spore count of Asian rust during the dry season from June 15th to Sept 15th.
With the expansion of corn ethanol in Mato Grosso, some farmers are planting 1st and 2nd crop corn. The cost of production is higher and disease and insect pressure is elevated. However, farmers are now making more money growing corn than soybeans in some areas.
