Tocantins, which was previously the northern part of the State of Goiás, became a State in 1989.

 

It is mostly cerrado (savannah); however, the Eastern portion of the State, which borders Bahia, is made up of large mesas (chapadas) and mountains.

 

The northwest part of the State has large cattle ranches.  Approximately 6 million head of cattle in the state.

 

The Southwest and South is flat and is a crop raising region appropriate for center-pivot irrigations systems as is the Northeastern region.

 

The State Government is focusing on developing the Agribusiness sector.  Soybean production has gone from 0 to 1 million tons in the last five years. 

 

The railroad will give access to the port in São Luis, Maranhão (MA) opening up the interior of TO to markets in North America and Europe.
