Map railroad North-South BrazilWhen concluded, the Railroad North-South (1980 km / 1,237 mi) will connect the states of  Maranhão, Tocantins and Goiás to the ports in the States of Espírito Santo and Sao Paulo, which are located to the South and East of Goiás.

 

The railroad integration of the Brazilian regions will be make possible the economic and social opening of the Brazilian cerrado with an area of approximately 1,8 million of km 2, representing 21.84% of the area of Brazil, and 15.51% of the Brazilian population. 

 

The railroad is scheduled to be completed to the city of Araguaína, TO in February 2007, which will allow access to the port of Itaqui in São Luis, Maranhão noted on the map.

 

 

A decree was published yesterday in the Federal Government's Legal Records newspaper authorizing the expropriation of areas in the States of Goiás and São Paulo, where the North-South will pass. The Governor of Tocantins, Carlos Henrique Gaguim received confirmation from the President of Valec Engineering, José Francisco das Neves (Juquinha), that the work of the North-South passing through southern Tocantins will begin construction again and at an accelerated pace. The guarantee was given on the morning of Saturday, 24 during the launch of the stretch of 212 kilometers of the work between the municipalities of Fatima and Alvorada. Tomorrow work will begin on three sections of the Norte-Sul in the State of Goiás.   Beginning in Uruaçu (240km north of the capital - Goiania) and continuing North to the Tocantins Stateline for a total of 198km of new track.    The Anápolis to Uruaçu (318km) is under construction and is nearing completion. Once finished the Norte-Sul will connect Belem, PA to the Port of Santos in São Paulo State.
