The region of Pedro Afonso attended the inauguration of the first sugar mill and bioenergy production in the region, this Thursday, July 21. The event took place at the unit of the company, Bunge "greenfield" (built from scratch) located in the rural municipality of Pedro Afonso. The ceremony was attended by the Governor of Tocantins, Siqueira Campos, Minister of Mines and Energy, Edison Lobao, the Japanese ambassador in Brazil, Akira Miwa, president of Bunge Brazil, Pedro Parente, the secretaries of government Jaime Coffee (Agriculture, Livestock and Agricultural Development), Renan of Arimathea (Casa Civil), Livio de Carvalho (Institutional Relations), Luiz Carlos Borges da Silveira (Science and Technology), among others.

During the inauguration, the governor said that the installation of this industry shows that the Tocantins is in the center of development. "This company represents a lot for this region and Tocantins, because here is established a whole chain of production, generating jobs and income for our people," said Siqueira. He said the installation of this company is a "sign" that other companies will come to the state.

"This is a very promising area, with favorable conditions for agricultural crops such as soybeans and we find here also favorable conditions for growing sugar cane," said Pedro Parente. Total investments in plant construction Pedro Afonso totaled about R$ 600 million (US$ 375 million) and will generate around 1,400 direct jobs, plus 3,000 indirect jobs.

The plant has an initial capacity to crush 2.5 million tons of cane per year.  In the region close to the industry, there is already a planted area of 24,000 hectares of sugarcane - a part of this area with irrigation.  However, it is estimated that this area will increase with the opening of the plant, as Secretary of Agriculture assessed the Tocantins. "This region, like many other regions of our state, has a great potential for agricultural production and the prospect is that in our next production will increase more," said Jaime Coffee
