Railroad - Ferrovia Norte-Sul


 

Map railroad North-South BrazilWhen concluded, the Railroad North-South (1980 km / 1,237 mi) will connect the states of  Maranhão, Tocantins and Goiás to the ports in the States of Espírito Santo and Sao Paulo, which are located to the South and East of Goiás.

 

The railroad integration of the Brazilian regions will be make possible the economic and social opening of the Brazilian cerrado with an area of approximately 1,8 million of km 2, representing 21.84% of the area of Brazil, and 15.51% of the Brazilian population. 

 

The railroad is scheduled to be completed to the city of Araguaína, TO in February 2007, which will allow access to the port of Itaqui in São Luis, Maranhão noted on the map.

 

** NOTE:  The railroad reached Araguaína on 18 May.  It is now being extended to Palmas; the capital.

Vale To Invest Big in Norte-Sul

Over the next five years, Vale will invest US$ 790 million in the its 720km section (Açailândia, MA to Palmas, TO) of the Norte-Sul.  The investment will increase the logistical capabilities for the export of grains and general cargo to the port in São Luis, MA.

Between 2008 and 2012, Vale will purchase 12,900 railcars and 245 engines with the railcars being purchased in Brazil and the engines imported from the USA..

Companhia Vale do Rio Doce, the second largest mining company in the World, won the bid on the 30 year sub-concession of the Norte-Sul railroad running 720 km between Açailândia, MA and Palmas,TO.   The railroad is scheduled to be completed to Palmas by 2009.
