The
small city Colinas do Tocantins, located on the Norte-Sul
railroad is set to become a major terminal for grain shipments
form Northeast Mato
Grosso, Western Bahia and Tocantins to the Port of Itaqui on the
northern coast of the State of Maranhão. By 2013, 9
million tons are expected to be shipped. By next year,
even with only partial completion of facilities 500,000 tons are
expected to be shipped primarily from northeastern Mato Grosso.
This section of the Norte-Sul is to be
completed by December 2009 which will allow farmers in
have access to North American, European and Asian markets via
the north instead of shipping through the southern ports in
Brazil.
Bunge, the Cargill and Multigrain are already in advanced negotiations
with
Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (the company with a 30
year
concession) to close shipping contracts to the port. Fertilizer
companies are studying the
best places to install their plants.
CVRD estimates that there
is room for the production of grains to grow by up to 10 times
in the
area of influence of the railroad. The estimate is that the
short-term investments in businesses related in one way or
another railroad to overcome the house of its R$ 1 billion.
Sugarcane is expect to become a major crop in the region.
Bunge has acquired more than 15,000
hectares along the railroad exclusively to plant
sugarcane. The plans of the company, best known for its business
with soybeans, is to install up to three plants in the region
for the production of ethanol and energy.
Etanalc, a company formed less than two years ago,
with the same goals, also seeking land near the railroad to
compete with Bunge. The company, which closed a contract for the
sale of ethanol for 20 years with Sempra Energy.
