ABOUT:
The city of Bom
Jesus has gone through a period of rapid population and economic
growth due to the expansion in agriculture. In the 1990s , producers
of soybeans in Rio Grande do Sul , Santa Catarina , Paraná , Uruguay and Paraguay began
to arrive and grow soybeans in the Cerrado of Piauí ,
especially in Bom Jesus and Uruçuí . Today,
approximately 220 000 hectares are cultivated with soybean, rice
and cotton in this region, considered the last agricultural frontier
in Brazil.
Located in the Vale do
Rio Gurgea, the city is very rich in groundwater. Spring wells (the
water comes out without pumping) are abundant. The rainfall average
is 900 to 1200 mm per year.
However, located
635 km from the capital Teresina ,
Bom Jesus presents some natural problems of small towns that
suddenly undergo a process of accelerated growth.
