The first hot spot in Mato
Grosso was discovered last Friday 360 km north of Cuiabá). A
total of four hot spots have been found so far this crop in all of Brazil -
75 had been discovered by this time last year.

Railroad from Lucas to Miracema,

The construction of the railroad benefiting the Center-West, North and
Northeast regions, has been approved by the Federal Government. This will
open up access to the port in Maranhão on the northern coast of Brazil reducing shipping and production cost
up to 30% in the Lucas do Rio Verde area. The route will be from Miracema,

through the cities of Confressa and
Ribeirão Cascalheira (south of
Querencia),
in Mato Grosso
(map) and on to Lucas do Rio Verde.
*This is a positive first step; however, funding is always a problem for
these projects in Brazil.

Sadia to Build One of
the Largest Meat Packing and Feed Complexes in Latin America
To be fully operational by 2009. The complex will have a capacity to
slaughter 500,000 chickens and 5,000 hogs per day as well as produce 1.2
tons daily of feed or consuming about 67.5 million bags of soybeans yearly,
which is the equivalent of 1.35 million hectares (3.24 million acres)
planted or 20% of Mato Grosso's soybean production. Total number of
employees will be 6,000.
Total investment in facilities
will be approximately R$ 435 million (US$202 million). Another R$ 485
million will be invested by chicken and hog producers in the region.

Fiagril, a Brazilian
company that grossed R$500 million last year, is investing R$31 million
(US$14.5 million) in Biodiesel plant in LRV.

In recent years, the Lucas do
Rio Verde region emerged as one of Brazil's largest soy producers. In the
current crop, the municipality should harvest 600,000 tones of soy, 40% of
the entire early-maturing soy crop. Lucas do Rio Verde has a planted area of
200,000 hectares, and a production rate of 3,000 kilograms per hectare,
which is 345 kilograms higher than the Brazilian average, projected at 2,645
kilograms per hectare. Harvest of the early-maturing variety in the
municipality should end this month. The conventional variety of soy will be
harvested from February onwards.
