In 2003, about 6.3 million tons of soybean were produced in Goiás making the State the 4th largest national producer. Total area harvested was 2.2 million hectares (5.28 million acres), an increase of 69.2% when compared to 1.3 million hectares in 1999. Soybean represents 55% of Goiás total grain production.
About 30% of the beans are processed in Goiás. The primary processing companies are
Caramuru Alimentos , Comigo, Coimbra and Granol. Approximately 70% of the soybeans produced in Goiás are sold in natura, without any kind of processing; the remainder is sold internally and the rest is exported.
Soybeans represent close to 60% of Goiás exports. 2003 figures of the soybean production were as follows: soybean seeds, US$ 474.0 million - 43%, bagasse and other soybean residues, US$ 181.4 million - 16%

In Goiás, farmers
take advantage of the climate and accelerate planting of soybeans
Rainfall in October is expected to surpass the expected amount.
Area planted expected to increase.
According to IBGE, the area planted to soybeans in
Rio
Verde, Goias , should be 270,000 hectares, an increase of five
thousand hectares compared to the last soybean crop. Production may
reach the 840,000 tons mark; an increase of 9%.
Farmer Fabio
Ribeiro, who will plant 500 hectares, has chosen an early variety,
with a cycle of 100 days, and even before planting has sold 50% of
production. "We got a price of $ 45 per bag. Now, to ensure the
produce is profit, "he says.
Another producer, Vilmar Oliveira, negotiated in advance 20% of his
crop, trading for inputs and soybean seed. "I looked
at the financial institutions have already made the pre-fix to avoid
problems. I already know what I have to produce to pay what I owe,
"he explains.
On Oliveira's farm the order is to accelerate planting, which
started eight days earlier than last year. He knows that it
can make a difference in January. Adding the
eight days together with the 15 from the shorter growing cycle, he
will harvest 23 days early compared to last year's harvest. Thus, the
planting the off-season planting corn crop can begin sooner.

Chinese are eager to acquire Goiás soybeans
A
proposal sent by the Chinese delegation Hopefull &
Holding Company Ltd., which will come later this year
to Goiás, provides for the initial purchase of 1.2
million tons of soybeans harvested in the 2011/2012.
According to the Secretary of Agriculture, Camilo
Antonio Flávio Lima, trading with the Chinese with the
participation of the state, however, the effectiveness
of the process needs to be done by private initiative.
"This entire process occurs when the producer is
prepared to deal with such a negotiation. Our
government is creating conditions for everything to be
done." said the secretary. For him, the cooperatives
are the main actors in this process because they
possess the knowledge and make the negotiations and
securing large quantities of grain. He explained that
the interest of Oriental is immediate because they
want alternatives to the multinational traders.
The industry says that for the current crop will be
difficult to ensure the desired amount of soy for the
Chinese, because more than 50% of soya production has
been marketed in the future. The suggestion of the
producers is to propose negotiations for the 2012/2013
season, when there will be time to organize all the
legal procedures, and cooperatives could still give
preference to Asia since negotiations were similar or
better to those already made with other countries.
For the next few days, Seagro will prepare and send to
China a document with the counter and set the date of
the visit for the delegation of Goiás to the close of
trading. At a meeting yesterday at the headquarters
Secretariat to assess the proposal, Antônio Flávio
said the governor Marconi Perillo will make a visit to
China in mid-September, when he will take a counter
proposal, which could result in closing the contract.

My opinion is that
this model of government trying "force" coops or
others into agreements with Chinese is not
sustainable.
Already delaying to 2013 crop and nothing has been
done as per expansion for 2012.
Private enterprise is the only way this will
evolve and that takes investment in long term
relationships.
All I see here in another trip to China and
signing of a piece of paper.

China Looking at
Investment in Goiás
24 March 11
China
could finance more than R$ 7 billion for expansion of soybean
production in the state of Goiás over the next seven years. With
plans to directly import 6 million tons of grain a year from the
state, four Chinese companies, state and mixed capital, will send a
delegation of technicians and experts early next month to evaluate
the project which will double the production of Goiás soybeans in
2018. The idea is to minimize the China's difficulties with the
import of soybeans.
China has been investing and seeking out partners in Brazil since
2009 in order to meet its current needs. "In 2009, former Brazilian
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva visited China with some
representatives of Brazil, to show the agricultural potential of the
region. In 2010, we received visits from four Chinese companies
followed intense talks.", he said exclusively to DCI, Pedro Ferreira
Arantes, a market analyst at the Federation of Agriculture and
Livestock of Goiás (FAEG), and representative of the entity in the
working group that drafted the proposal to the Chinese in Goiás.
The State of Goiás planted this season about 2.55 million hectares,
with a forecast to harvest 7.8 million tones. With Chinese
investment, the expectation is to double the state both in
production and in the grain growing area in the next seven years to
meet the requirement to export 6 million tons a year from China. "If
this agreement is closed, the Chinese expect the state to export six
million tons of peanuts to them, for years," celebrated.
For this expansion, the state provides to renew up to 3 million
hectares of underutilized pastures, which all add up to 8 million
hectares, with production of one animal per two acres. "Our proposal
is to renew the grazing areas, which have existed for over 40 years
in northern Goias, with a very low productivity. Today we have more
than eight million hectares of underutilized pastures are areas that
have less than a animal per hectare, reaching at most two acres to
an animal, "he said.
Mr.
Arantes calculated that for every 1,000 ha, it will require
an investment of R$ 2.5 million to clean and prepare
the soil soybean production. In addition to the purchase of machinery,
storage and infrastructural expansion as well. "The
total investment will require more than R$ 7 billion over the
next seven years to bring 3 million new hectares online." , said the analyst.
Mr. Arantes expects to establish a pilot
project of 100,000 hectares for producing soybeans with the Chinese. After this
experience the state will implement its plan to double production.
At the beginning of the decade, China accounted for 3% of purchases
of Brazilian agribusiness products. By 2010, the it had reached
14%, taking the lead in imports of products from Brazil. "We will be
the farm of the Chinese," concluded Pedro Arantes.
